Antifreeze in water tank

Hi!

I have taken some of the water dripping from the water tank and put it in the freezer to test if it has antifreeze in it. It freezes. The drain plug doesnt budge and if I somehow get it open i am afraid it might not get tight again. So what can I do to make the water antifreeze? Can I just put some isopropyl alcohol in it?

What would you suggest?

(quoted from post at 11:03:06 09/14/21) Is it this piece of old stiff rubber tubing?

If the hose is too hard to bend & remove without damaging the radiator outlet, use a hack saw and carefully cut out a section of the old hose between the radiator outlet and the pipe. Then after the coolant has drained, carefully work the old pieces off. A new hose should be pliable enough to get on. Don't forget new hose clamps positioned so they can be tightened. Hose clamps do not need to be tightened down way tight. Just tight enough to not leak.

Also, I'd try to drain the engine through the petcock usually found on the side of the engine. This will remove any water still in the engine.

you need a new hose. i have seen them hoses so old and hard like a rock they are brittle and just break like a rock, plus yo wont get a seal
on them anyhow. plus do not damage the rad removing it. just take a hacksaw and saw the centre out , then remove the two pieces.

There is a drain cock on the engine block above the starter motor mentioned in the op manual but nothing about draining from it. But maybe a good idea when storing for winter.

If I could find a new drain valve for the tank and get the old one off without dameging the tank that would be nice so I could easely empty the tank when storing. But parts for this model seems hard to find.
Thread is 14mm. Only once I can find is for other old ih tractor models 1/4 npt.

Removing the hose by any of the a fore mentioned methods will work. I just mix my own antifreeze since it is cheaper to buy full strength then mix. I do it a couple ways. If I know how much a machine takes I can mix it as I pour it in then finish with mixing the last of it in a pail and pouring in. The engine must be run then for a bit to finish thoroughly mixing to not freeze. An hour at mid throttle should do it or go out and work it for a while.

It certainly isnt cheap. What is the mix? 50/50 water and isopropyl alcohol?

Where in general are you located? Automotive coolant antifreeze is commonly available in the US, (auto parts stores, hardware stores, Walmart, many places) in either full strength so you mix your own or premixed. It is commonly Mono Ethylene Glycol or Mono Propylene Glycol. Alcohol is not commonly used any more.

I am in scandinavia.

I am thinking there must be similar solutions used in your area these days. If I remember right it was methanol, methyl, wood alcohol that were used for coolant antifreeze here years ago. The newer antifreeze coolants also include Inorganic Additive Technology and Organic Acid Technology (with variations). Alcohol antifreezes will evaporate and also boil at a lower temp, thus the move away from them. An automotive repair shop near you should be able to give you some info on what is available.

Well maby some day there will be a sale on coolant.

Besides the freeze protection offered by antifreeze there is the rust preventive nature of it. I know some people can be confused by the term "Permanent Anti Freeze". I believe it was originally used to point out the difference between alcohol and the Glycol antifreeze. The alcohol will evaporate and need replenishing at regular intervals where the Glycol will pretty much last for a very long time, at least for the cold months!

I know I would not run any water cooled engine with straight water except for a short time to check for leaks. Actually might need to be shopping for some coolant as since retiring from the quarry my access to free coolant has more of less dried up!
