H brake question

I have finished up an H project and I am having trouble with a brake band. I have replaced the brake band and the brake band housing. With the brake adjusted as tight as it will go, I still cannot get the brake band to grab the drum with the brake pedal compressed fully. I am wondering what my solution would be? Is there possibly a different sized brake band and did I install the incorrect size? Not sure what my coultion is at this point and am seeking advice. Below is a picture. This is a 1940 Farmall H serial number 88485.

i do not know. it seems that the band may be too large. cut a pattern out of cardboard, the size of the drum and sit in into the band and have a look . perhaps this will help with some questions.

Brake bands have been made too long for many years. Not to mention that if you actually use the brakes to turn the tractor the top eye will rip out at the spot welds. I have cut them off and rewelded them and they will work. Your best bet is to have the original bands relined if you still have them.

At the bottom of the brake pan there is a set screw that has to be turned in. I believe it centers the band and then it will tighten onto the drum when the brake is applied. It also seems to me that when I was doing H brakes a few years ago that some jobbers brake bands were just slightly bigger and some cutting and welding had to happen to make them work

i would clean that brake drum surface up to shiny. its no good like that. jack up rear wheels and block tractor good put in low gear slowest idle using emery cloth from behind. saves pulling it off. plus measure the drum diameter and then the band diameter should be pretty much the same , turn it in the applied position and see if it gets smaller than the drum.

Wrap the band on the drum by itself. Clamp it in place with 2 inch C clamps allowing the pin ends to be free to extend. Now measure the Distance between the pin holes with it about where the pivots are located. It may be as much as 1/2 too long. Cutting it and rewelding using an overlap with some slack to allow it to release (professionally welded!) would work. Jim
