I have a 1086 that the 1000 rpm pto shaft is bent on. I dont know how it happened, it was that way when we got it. We didnt have any 1000 rpm equipment so it didnt matter and I never fixed it. We have a JD chopper now that needs it. I have bought a replacement shaft. Looking at the parts drawing it looks like maybe I can change it without pulling the whole pto. It appears like maybe I can just take the back cover off. Does anyone have any advice for me?
 
Ah Nope ya have to tear the WHOLE thing apart and you have to have the clutch spring compressor to remove one snap ring before it all comes apart . When removing you have to becareful not to ding the pick up tube feeding the unit hyd. pump . Ya need a seal and gskt pkg as your in there and now is the time to replace the seals along with looking at the main housing where the teflon seal ride . The unit is heavy , ya must drain the hyd fluid . It is helpful to have the fitting to check and reset loc up pressure . A cheery picker is extremely helpful .
 
Thank You very much! I was afraid it wouldnt be that easy, thats why I asked before I tried it. I had the pto out of it about 5 years ago, the 540 shaft broke when I was bailing hay.
 
One more question I hope you can help with, the pto quits running going down a steep hill. Its not low on oil. What should I look for to cure that while its apart?
 
Take note of when the tractor vet said to be careful to not ding the pickup tube, because you dinged the pickup tube the last time you had it out. It's sucking air on the downhill.
 
A loose flopping pick up tube , at one time or other some one while removing the PTO for what ever reason did not do it correctly .Probably tryen to be a MAN and man handle it by hand an not hanging from a Cheery picker. Here is how it is done You remove the bolts around the outside and look hard for the short one way down under the bottom left up on top there is one bolt that is a shade off center remove that bolt and take a short piece of chain and put the bolt thru a link and face that link back towards center and tighten it down , now hook it up to a cherry picker/ shop crane , Myself i have a piece of tubing that i slip over the 540 shaft if it is not broke off as a lever to control the unit as i break it free from the rear end l. I also have the top link plate off so i can reach in and remove the PTO drive shaft and let it fall to the bottom of the rear end housing . As i pull back on the shop crane / Cheery Picker i push down on the piece of tubing to tip the ft. end of the unit UP so that i do not bang the pick up tube as it is thin and will dent easy at it's Mounting point and will crush the tube . This will allow the pick up tube to become loose and flop around and this will cause the poorly designed seal not to seal at the inlet of the pump in the PTO unit . NOW HUSTON you have a problem when this happens . I have run into a bunch of tubes that have been flattened and flopping around . My fix for this IS a 5/8th Craftsman 1/2 drive DEEP WELL socket as it fits inside the tube perfect in the undamaged part add in a 12 inch extension and a hammer and drive it down the tube and it will take the dig out perfect . Normally the old seal is not hurt . the pick up tube when put back in looking at it from the back side it should be canted to the left to about the 6:45 possion . Tools needed for this job is a pair of side cutters , a 3/4 socket , a 15/16ths socket a 12 inch extension the spring compressor and you can make one with some 3/8th all thread a heavy flat plate a pieces of 3 inch pipe about say 6 inches long with a cut out to get to the snap ring a pair of really good flat tipped snap ring pliers a 9/61ths wrench and socket a 1/2 inch square plug socket the special fitting to hook up a 600 PSI hyd gauge and IF you have to get into the teflon seals a dental pick and a piston ring compressor , seal drivers are nice but barn yard engineering will work. Time for me to do the job due to OLD FIPPEN AGE is around 4 hrs.

I think I dented a Pick Up Tube when I was removing the PTO out of my 1466, it needed rebuilt. I bought a Used PTO that needed Rebuilt, As Is condition. The Dual PTO worked for a day then quit

I have a slightly dented Pickup Tube and I will try the 5/8 Deep Well Socket to try and get the dent out. [b:8d8f76dadc]Thanks for your Advice Tractor Vet.

I was real good at removing and installing them, I did it myself but I would agree with using a way to lift it if you don't want to do it by
hand.

How much does a Dual PTO weigh? 100 Pounds? I am not sure.
 
How much do they weigh? Too darn much. Put many in with no
help in sight. Out in the field. In a ditch etc. Finally got a
cherry picker in the shop so that was a gift for sure.

I remember one a customer brought in for repair. He had tractor
nosed down in the ditch. I brought the unit out to install and
his young husky kid picked it up and carried in down into the
ditch. I asked, is it heavy Charlie. A litte he replied.
 
Keep in mind here NOT ALL 5/8ths deep wells are the correct size to fit in the tube only the Craftsman is . They are of thin wall design , None of my Mac Sockets fit . Never put the Mic's to the inside it was sorta gee i wonder what i can drive down this tube to take the flat spot out with and started rummagen around the shop looking then to the tool box and it was oh hey this will work . Sorta like taking a dig out of a SHOT GUN barrel with the correct size mandrill .
I had thought about having my local wizzard machinist turn one out on his lathe but never went ahead with it . Some that even after ya did that they still did not hold well in place i have placed a small weld on the clamp side with the mig that way you could remove the clamp with the tube attached to it , just have to not burn thru the tube .
 
In case anyone wonders, I didnt have a socket the correct size. I was a Tool and Die maker for 25 years. I measured and made a mandrel. The size was .913.
