On the Farmall 140, I have removed 7 bolts holding pto housing in place, removed 3 bolts for the bearing retainer. What else do I need to do to remove the pto housing? Thanks

I don't know what 3 bolt bearing retainer you are looking at, unless it is the one at the pulley shaft. In any case, you shouldn't need to do anything with it.

The PTO housing is only held by the 7 bolts. However, there are 2 dowel pins. Between them and a possibly stuck gasket, it may give you a bit of a fight.

Are you removing the PTO or belt pulley? Belt pulley housing is sealed
with a big O ring which can be hard to get over, twisting helps with
that. If no belt pulley is installed or is already removed then pull and
lightly tap on the PTO housing after removing the bolts. I don't believe
there is a gasket between the PTO housing and the back of the
transmission.

No Belt pulley. Had not thought about the dowell pins. That is likely the problem. Thanks guys. Sure appreciate your help. Don't want to break anything I can't fix.

140 PTO housing removal.
7 bolts holding the PTO housing in place is correct [b:c04209e43b]but there is an 8th bolt, 3/8 dia at the bottom rear of left fender that screws into the PTO housing also[/b:c04209e43b]. It made me think a dowel or something else was preventing the housing from coming off easily.
Info here has been wonderful, Thank you.

You are absolutely right. The B and the Shop Mules I have been around lately don't have the fender bolt as the fender is not tight against the PTO housing. So I didn't think of it. An A/140 without a PTO came with a little bracket that the fender bolted to.

The fun will come when you put it back. I think I had to engage the pto and keep it that way to make the reinstall easy. It has been a while. If you are pulling the bull shaft it has to line up deep inside the rear end. Seems that when I engaged the pto prior to pulling the shaft the outer shield remained in line and inserting was easy. Do read your manual to be sure you know just how to remove the shaft and get it back in or you will be pulling the top cover off.
