Growling transmission

I have an A, BN and 100 that each has a growl in the transmission. I know from reading threads here that is common due to the way the gears are cut. My question is how do I know its too much growl or the growl is from a bearing going bad. I'm most concerned about the amount of growl my 100 makes. There is no growl with the clutch out and not in gear so I'm thinking its not the bearing where the drive shaft enters the transmission, maybe just the gears. It sounds worse in higher gears. Could it be something to be concerned about?

Do you know the history of the tractor, where it sat, outside, inside, if the transmission grease was changed, i am guessing it had condensation in it from sitting, and it got on the ring and pinion, if you could take the cover off look, that would be a start,The bearing arn't going to growl because there worn some, mine didn't anyway !!!

Well with them it is not hard to have a look see , just pull the shifter and cover and put eyes on things all your out is a gskt . Now what you will find more then likely is the oil slinger gear trashed on the half dozen or so of them i have had apart it was totally gone on all . Some say don't worry about it , my customers wanted it replaced . SO i replaced them and while in there i replaced a few bearings . Went and ever made up special adapters for my splitting stands to work on the off sets , made for and easy job . Bolt stands to the torque tube and unbolt and slide apart all most like working on a toy .

Drain the oil into a pan. use a magnet on a stick to feel in the drain hole to the sides. You will get metal. If the fragments are like dust, rinse it out and refill it with 80-140 gear oil. If there are big chunks of gear teeth or sheet metal bearing cage metal, take the top off and do as the vet indicates. Straight cut spur gears make whine and uniform noise. Bearings make grinding noise. Jim

I guess I will pull the cover and take a look. I'd like to put on a new gasket anyway. With all the Farmalls I have I have never had to work on a transmission for anything other than seals and gaskets. I don't know the history of the tractor - it belonged to a farmer that grew vegetables and actually owned a field across the road from me and I never saw the tractor until he died and had an auction. He used it to cultivate. He never grew vegetables in the field across the road from me so I guess thats why I never knew he had it. It sat under cover for some amount of time as it had no radiator when I bought it. I suspect someone smashed it up and never got replaced after looking at the grill. It was under cover at that time. It will be interesting to take a look.

There was a Topic on Red Power Forum about a Super A I think. I have copied and pasted it.

I have a SA.i bought it with a bad motor.wouldnt run.i had a good motor.i tore it all apart, got new motor in and it runs great.but the steering is real sloppy cause if I use any gear higher than 2, it shakes real bad.plus tranny makes really loud noises.all the gears work but noisy.i dont know what to do with it. Take motor out for another tractor or fix steering and tranny. Got a lot of money in it already.tires and wheels are good.so are brakes.

Never had a tranny apart or even the steering box.wished I knew tranny and steering was bad before I bought it

Would anyone be able to help him with advice?

I grew up with an A, SA, C, SC, 200, and 240 as well as running Case, AC, JD, Ford, and Massy F equipment. There may be more. All tended to whine in the tranny and rear end and the heaver the load the more the whine. Never had a bearing go out but I am sure it would sound different. The Farmalls all had a lot of whine and the one row offsets tended to be the loudest.
