My grandson just bought a International Harvester IH 706 D, serial number 807 S-Y can anyone tell me what year this is and what diesel engine it has in it and any other information about this series of tractor ?

1963.Y ou have a very early tractor.The
first 706 was SN:501.Almost 48,000 were
made from '63 to '67.I once owned
SN:637.The early tractors used a glow
plug start 282.The late ones used a
direct start German built 310(A much
better engine).'7's are great
tractors.However,the 282 wasn't the best
choice for an engine(IMHO).A BIT
underpowered,and hard to start at
times.I own a late('67)706(since
'84),SN:44000.It's 310 German diesel
engine has 13,000 hrs and still going
strong.I use it regular basis.I
recommend you order an owners,service
and parts manuals.At minimum,the
OM.Happy tractoring!

Yep a vary early one as Delta said . Thing's to stay up on are the clutch and T/A adjustments your normal maintenance and glow plugs and GOOD batterys. A valve adjustment may be needed as sometimes this is way over looked as tractor engines are not like a car or pick up engine of today as they do not have have hyd lifters that take care of them selfs . The clutch adjustment along with what else goes along with it will help kep the T/A working and make for way easier shifting . Never drop0 the park loc in while the tractor is moving even the slightest , fastest way to end up with a big repair job . If it has NOT BEEN UPGRADED to the new style park lock that is SPRING loaded then i would advise to up grade NOW as the old style over center one can JUMP OUT and this can cause major damage to the range transmission .

You hit the ball out of the park, with that not dropping the park lever, while its moving ,i had my 806 since new, did it once, never hurt nothing !!

Delta didn't tell you, but he turboed his many years ago. So a 706 with a 310 is very durable.
