Farmall Super A Clutch problem

I have a Super A Farmall that the clutch was stuck. There wasn't any resistance when pushing the clutch pedal. We loosened the pressure plate bolts several turns and then jarred it with a hammer and we got it broke loose enough to get some clutch pedal. I pulled it about a mile and the clutch came loose. You can push the pedal and the fan would quit turning and release it and it would start turning while pulling it. We tightened the pressure plate bolts back up and then we didn't have any resistance against the pedal again. We loosened the bolts enough to tighten the pedal up but left some play at the top then drove it around pushing the pedal in and out constantly and it still is the same. Any Ideas of what we can try before splitting the tractor.

Speaking as one of the top ten lazy people I can bet the time and effort put into trying to avoid splitting and fixing it right will probably amount to more than the splitting.

And if I'm recalling correctly there is a expansion plug at the back of the block that will start leaking even if you manage to avoid the splitting and that is one you can't fix with out splitting!

if you split it, make sure that you replace the clutch pilot bushing.

Rust and debris may have gotten between the lined disc and the pressure plate and between the lined disc and the flywheel or the lining may have broken loose from the rivets and disintegrated.

If you have even a "cherry picker" or a small hoist and something sufficient to hang it from, crib up the back end, support the engine and roll it apart, really nothing much to it.

(Of course I am procrastinating over splitting an "A" to replace the flywheel ring gear, and I am well-equipped with splitting stands and a good hoist, LOL!)

I have a nice shop and all the tools but just trying to be lazy. I'm helping someone out and trying to do it with the least amount of work.

Pressure plate is bad and the fingers are stuck in the down position

I loosened up the fingers and when I loosen the bolts it works some. Thats the part I can't figure out.

Bad springs in the plate or other such thing being bad or stuck can cause that

I've never had a Super A apart so don't know how the flywheel and pressure plate look. I thought maybe the pressure plate fitted inside of the flywheel closely and maybe it was rusted keeping it from going all the way down. There were a bunch of rat nests in the bell housing so thought they might have caused rust.

Condition of throwout bearing, and the free play need to be checked. If the fingers are nearly level with each other when the bolts are tight, there should be about 1/8 to 3/16 clearance between the Throwout bearing, and the finger tips. Adjust with the rod, not the fingers. Jim
