I need to replace the oil seal between the transmission and the brake, left side of my 1941 A. My shop manual says remove the wheel and unbolt and remove the final drive. I can't belive that it is that easy!! What problems can I expect when I remove the final drive? Because of the oil leak I am planning to replace the brake band and turn the drum. I never had either final drive off. What should I expect?

I have done a couple of B's. Like David A said- be sure to check both seals for the shaft (one at transmission and one at final housing). Make sure you check the shaft for wear marks from the old seal. If the shaft has grooves wore in it the new seal might not seal very good. Some people say you can try JB weld to fill in the wear grooves.

I did this recently on my super A. It's not too bad. First get it blocked up securely. I helped hold up the weight by roping the final drive to the rafters overhead. The trans seal for the left side is right there. When you have the brake drum off, examine the final drive seal behind it. IH has the parts. The right side is harder because you have to remove the seat and axle extension tube. More difficult to block up the tractor.

It is that simple. Be sure to disconnect the brake control rod on the left side, remove wheel, remove the six bolts that hold it together, wrestle it off the locating pins and off it comes.
