I went thru distributor, cleaned polished lubed and reinstalled no change. I'm not seeing any change from TDC on the timing light at 900 RPM to 2200 RPM. I even took a donor distributor went thru it and installed my electronic ignition into it and still no change.is there any thing else that could cause it not to advance or retard whatever it is supposed to be doing I'm really confused. I'm pretty sure I need
to rebuild carb as I can only get it to run smooth at 900 rpm. Anything lower than that it runs bad and try's to die. Not sure what is going on?

one more attempt. If the springs are weak and the timing is set running at 900, the advance may have already happened. set the timing to TDC not running. if you start it and it shows advance, that is the problem. 900 rpm should be into the advance curve maybe 6 to 10 degrees. Jim

Those engines should be idling at 400 with no problems. Best to get the carb done also. But yes as Jim says static time it , them check it with the light and you have your answer. Cause at 900 rpm its already advancing. Plus u need the timing set to spec. Before doing the carb adjustment.

A gas engine 350 Utility should have a code "O" distributor (first letter stamped on the mounting flange)." The advance should start (0 degrees) at 400 rpm. It should reach 22 degrees at 1925 rpm.

Check the plate attached to the distributor shaft. It should be stamped 22L.

I'm sorry but that's what I'm trying to do. so I static time first? how do you do that? I don't how it will idle at 400 rpm. how do you set the timing to spec before carb adjustment if it won't idle at 400?

You set it with the engine stopped. Open the distributor cap noting where the terminal for number one cylinder spark plug is on the distributor housing. Probably be a good idea to put a mark on it some way. Now bump the starter until the rotor is coming around the fire number one cylinder. Now use the fan to turn the engine to The timing mark, connect a test light to the distributor wire, loosen and turn the distributor to the point where the light just lights. So when the points open is when it fires. Now it should be timed to TDC or static timed. I see you have an electronic ignition so this may not work.

With all the plugs out, you can turn it by hand, or with a rear wheel in the air and in high gear, CW from the front, to get #1 to spark. Stop it right there. and align the timing mark to TDC. Now you will need to play with it with electronic ignition to get it to spark when you are rotating the distributor CCW. Jim
