shifter dimensions

A friend's 1943 H s/n 139507 has a shifter with the transmission end plumb wore out of any shape at all. He wants to have it built up and machined to original dimensions, but can't find for sure what they are. There's a photo on the net that shows it 3/4 wide at the business end, but that seems too wide for the rails. Right now it's about 1/2 wide but sort of a trapezoid with a twist in it. Anyone know what the dimensions should be?

Help us keep this old gal doing her thing. Thanks a lot!!

This seems to work for H an M Farmalls. Jim

I suspect this is the pic you are talking about, hope it shows up photo bucket can flake out sometimes. I cannot personally tell you if that is a correct dimension or not. I need to do this to my uncles H it has a terrible sloppy shifter. What I would do is bend an L on the end of a wire ..bale wire in my case.. Then fit it down in the slot trimming the foot of the L until I felt it had the proper fit. Then use that to measure the final grind down of the weld build up. I feel the most important dimension is the .43 to gage the length so it is extending down in the slot the proper amount. You could use a strip of tin as well for the measure tool trimming it with a snips for proper fit. I suppose .030 - .040 in. of front to back play in the slot would not be out of line so it would easily slide from one quadrant to the next.

Those previous comments are exactly correct. I might advise, also, when I went to have local blacksmith do mine, he said Don't worry, I know exactly how they're supposed to be. And he did.

I would try to find a newer used one from one of the Recycle yards.
In 1943, all he good steel was going to the military. Thus, you may not be able to rebuild it to last.
