im working on a 1958 farmall 460 gas and i was wondering if anyone had a wiring diagram for putting a gm 10si alternator on? if not can someone explain how to wire it? thanks

A true 3 wire Delco 10si is easy to wire up. You have 3 wires and a 2 wire plug. The #2 wire on the plug goes to the big charge stud on the alternator. The wire from the charge stud goes to the none ignition side of the amp gauge and the #1 wire on the plug goes to the ignition switch the side that is the same as the coil hook up is at or you can even hook it to the ignition side of the coil so as to save some wire. You most likely will need a resister or diode or light bulb in the #1 wire or you may not be able to shut the engine down due to alternator back feed

Sorry no I do not. I have never needed one but I am also a former Navy E.T so this type of wiring is easy for me to do. If look look in the archives you should be able to find a picture posted by a guy named Bob that shows the wiring

If your tractor is pos ground, you will have to reconnect the battery for neg to ground and switch the ammeter wires to the opposite ammeter post so it will indicate correctly for the neg ground that a Delco 10SI alternator needs.
Also buy a delco alternator regulator plug kit from your auto parts store for a neat looking and safe wiring job.

Attached is a good wiring diagram for an IH tractor converted to Delco alternator and 12V.

The #1 wire is the "Excite" wire that enrtgizes the alternator field and starts it charging. It is also used to ground the GEN or ALT light on many machines.

The #2 wire is the"sense" wire where the regulator senses system voltage so the alternator can maintain normal system voltage of about 14.2-14.8 volts

I'm about to do the same on another '58 IH460 gas. Is there a benefit to getting the single wire version from yesterday's tractor?

Well for one thing, the #2 wire on the alternator is supposed to go all the way back to the positive post of the battery or at least the main connection on the starter. That one is fhe voltage sense wire. It might not charge as well if you just connected to the BATT post on the alternator. The #1 wire is the feedback for the idiot light that draws current if the alternator is not putting out. So if it draws current, the light comes on indicating the alternation is not charging.

Then is this not a good option?

I thought this guy's youtube explanation of how to wire the alternator was really simple to follow. I used it for my diesel 424.
