earlier this week as i drove past the old ih dealership, as i do every day coming home from work, i saw that it was being cleaned out. the dealership has been totally closed for about 5 or 6 years now. this dealership has been an icon for the small farms in my area for about the last 40 or 50 years. we bought our 2 farmall tractors, baler, implements from this, and it is quite sad it see if being torn down. i am going to try today to go out and see if i can scrounge any misc parts etc before the dozers come in. does anyone else care to share any memories of local ih dealers going out of business or when they were torn down?

At my county here in So. Michigan(Hillsdale),
at one time, about 1948 I'm thinking, there were no less than 5 IH dealers. Now this county is average size, 24 by 30 miles or so. At the same time there were 2 JD dealers, 1 Allis-Chalmers, 1 Oliver, 2 Ford, 1 Massey-Harris, 1 J. I. Case, 1 Co-op, and 1 Ferguson "Long Line-Tractors" dealers and a Wards Farm Store selling B. F. Averys and the 6 cyl. Lowther Customs. Now in this modern age there is 1 John Deere, 1 "blue" New Holland, and 1`"red" Case New Holland dealer. I sure am glad I saw those days, for an old farm kid like me, it just ain't much fun any more, except for the old farm tractor and equipment shows-Thank God for them.

I recently quit working for a Navistar Truck Dealer. In 14 years I met some ex IHC Ag. Mechanics and former IHC company employees that were regional service managers for area AG dealers. They were now truck division workers.
I can tell you that something died in the hearts of those Men. There lives were never the same after IHC's Corperate Tragedy. When I first started with International trucks there were a bunch of old boy's. It is not the same today!
It was not that hard to walk away. But I still have the memories.

Sheridan, IN was home to O. T. Kercheval & Sons IH dealership. The building is still there at the corner of Main and 2nd Street, with the Kercheval name (1880 something, I think) at the top of it.

In the 1950s, it seemed like every little hamlet in central Indiana had an IH dealership. Lots of other brands also, as most folks did all their trading, banking, etc., within 10-15 miles of home. For example, Sheridan had a population of about 2000, and featured IH, Deere, and Moline through the early 70s. Only Deere is left, as a branch dealership of a large operation.

I can still remember going to Kercheval's as a little kid and seeing those big shiny H and M models in that small showroom, the two to four people who were BUSY behind the parts counter, and the sounds of the shop area as equipment was being assembled, repaired, or rebuilt. Everyone that worked there (and most of the folks who came through the door) knew Dad (and me) by name. As I got bigger, the tractors did also. The building remained the same, as did the way the operation was run. They sold us the stuff that kept our farm operation running, knew how to fix it (correctly!) when it needed repair, and stood behind what they sold. The entire community was saddened when the doors closed.

The local dealer here closed up shop in 1962. The building is still there; I drive by it every day(it's now home to a printing company). Some of the employees were given the choice to transfer to another dealership about 20 miles away. That dealer is still in business - they went the distance with IH and kept the truck franchise after IH sold the ag division. I'm waiting for one of the new Next Generation Trucks to show up on their lot so I can check it out.

I can relate to this. The dealership I went to with my father when I was growing up has been closed for a few years now. I recently drove by and did not even recognize it. Lots of memories running for parts for our #45 baler, and Farmall tractor during haying season. I always enjoyed seeing what was on their lot.

I would like to know the story behind the IHC dealership in Kingman, Kansas. It looks like they just pulled the doors shut and walked away, and it has been like this since the early 90's that I am aware of. The IH dealer in Ft. Stockton, TX. was also like this for many years, but sometime in the last couple of years, a new business has moved in.

Ah yes. Had a local one as well. They closed quite a few years ago. The family went on and kept farming.

My Grandfather was approached once and was pleaded with several times to open one up. Interesting thing with Grandpa, he had the first rubber-wheeled tractor in town, an H, of course! =P

Then, my 3rd cousin (or so) has been the owner of one for over 45 years (I think). They're one of the oldest dealers around. Haven't stopped-in in a while. Wonder how the last merger is flying with them?

oh, Carleton Farm Supply for any locals reading this.

Did you get down to Jim & Kieth's 50th anniversary a few weeks ago. Not many dealers around here have stayed with it for fifty years.
