Farmall 240 Pressure Plate Failure

I recently replaced the clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate and pilot bushing on my Farmall 240, utilizing the IH manuals for technical aspects such as torque specs, etc. The tractor ran fine and was parked in a dry, covered shed for four weeks. When used again the clutch would not disengaged and the inspection port showed that the wire clips that hold the pressure plate release fingers were all off and mangled, which was confirmed after splitting the tractor again. The pressure plate is under warranty and will be replaced but I am looking for any possible reasons or installation mistakes that may have happened so it does not occur again

Either someting in the "kit" was incorrect, or the PP was not assembled correctly. If you have the old one are there differences? do they appear to be able to catch on anything? Compare the replacement with the original Jim

The clips may have caught on those things on the back side of the clutch plate. Did the old clutch plate have those.

It's possible one of the springs wasn't clipped in completely and fell off, catching the others on the way by.

Look at the TO bearing and fork to see if there are any marks from contact with the springs.

Also, if the pressure plate finger height wasn't correctly factory set and double-checked after installation along with the lined disc it's POSSIBLE the finger height was too "low" and they were shoved too close to the pressure plate by the T.O. bearing causing the finger anti-rattle springs to be damaged and/or forced out of place.

(It's always a good idea to check finger height after installation even with a factory clutch because if the actual lined plate used is thicker or thinner than what the pressure plate is set up for the finger height will be WRONG.)

the disc is installed BACKWARDS, no way those springs will stay there when you step on the clutch, they will get wiped out. hub goes to the flywheel. here is pictures of the correct way from my junk one.

install this way or you will be doing it again with NO WARRANTY!

Thanks for your hints/comments. As "wore out" mentioned, I believe one of the clips slipped out of the recessed holes in the release fingers and destroyed the other two. I do have to take issue with the idea that the clutch was installed backward. I utilized the IH Blue Robbin manuals and from images/descriptions of others installing the exact same clutch and it clearly shows the raised spline are facing the pressure plate. (see pic of the same clutch and placement as mine). I also sent the same pics to the manufacturer and they did not make mention of an error of clutch placement when honoring the warranty. I think this should be mentioned as his way of installation is in error and someone in the future may make his same mistake. Therefore, I WILL install it the same correct way and it WILL be covered by WARRANTY.

I don't know either way, but the drawing on avspare for the 140 shows the circle of springs next to the pressure plate for a Rockford clutch. Pressure plate in drawing looks like yours. Didn't see a drawing for the 240 but they may have it.

i am at fault here , i dug through my books here and that is correct. it was looking funny to me with that hub facing out. should have double checked first.

No problem at all...it did make me look back through my notes/resources to assure I installed it correctly which is a good thing. When I do the reinstall, I will be sure to check the finger height instead of relying on what came from the factory.
