Had a 1953 M Farmall engine completely rebuilt. The machinist told me the cylinder head was cracked, but that he could fix it. So he did. Put the engine back in tractor. After one hour of running there was water in the oil. Took the head back off, carried back to machinist and he pressure tested at 40 PSI and found no leaks. He suggested I fill the cylinder block water jacket up with kerosene. I did and it sat for three days without leaking. He suggested I put head back on and not crank the tractor. So I did. After two days approximately 1/2 cup of water drained out of the oil pan (no oil in oil pan). Can someone please help and advise what could be wrong?

Just a long shot but you are tightening the bolts down in the proper sequence. That will cause the gasket not ot seal properly.Where is the crack in the head? How did it run?

If I am understanding what you said, no leaks found until you bolted the head back on, then it leaked. Have heard of cracks that will not show until heated or under pressure. Sounds like you have a crack somewhere. Might want to call another shop and ensure that 40psi is enough to find a leak. It could be that torquing the head down distorts things enough to open up a crack somewhere. Under operation, as the motor gets hot the crack would open up farther.

Don't have an easy answer for this one. I would ensure that the head is indeed alright. If so, sounds like the block might need pressure tested.

Good Luck.

Little BIT, did you plane the head before you installed it? A tolerance of 5\1000 is acceptable, but heads warp and I had a vehicle head that was out 20\1000ths and it leaked like a sieve. If the head is warped no gasket will prevent leak. Just my thoughts..good luck, Mike In Exeter Ontario.
