I GROW ABOUT 8 ACRES OF GARLIC, POTATOES AND ASPARAGUS. I ALREADY HAVE A LARGE TRACTOR, AND AM LOOKING FOR AN OLDER MACHINE WHICH WILL CULTIVATE AND HILL THESE CROPS. A PRECISE, MID-MOUNT CULTIVATOR WOULD BE BEST. IDEALLY, I'D LIKE SOMETHING WITH HYDRAULICS, PTO AND ABILITY TO CONVERT TO 3PH. THE A, SUPER A AND 140 HAVE BEEN RECOMMENDED. IS THIS GOOD ADVICE? WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE AMONG THESE 3, PRO'S AND CON'S, AND WHAT MIGHT BE THE APPROX. PRICE DIFFERENCES IN DECENT OPERATING SHAPE? ANY SUGGESTIONS AND INFO APPRECIATED.

Go with the Super A (or the 100/140 which are essentially later versions of the Super A) I have had several Cubs and now have a Super A and it is about 1/3 larger that the Cub with twice the HP. BUT the biggest plus for me is that you can work on the Super A engine/ generator, etc. with a quick and easy remnoval of the hood, and can test run the engine with the hood off. The Cub has the hood/gas tank as one unit ( which means you have to jury rig a gas source if you want to test your repairs with the hood off) and it is a pain in the a-- in my opinion--but that is just my opinion. Good luck

I have both a Cub and a Super C with cultivators. I would recommend the Super A for your purposes, however. The Cub does really well in a garden, but for hilling several acres of potatoes, I would want something with more horsepower. I wouldn't recommend anything with a 2-row cultivator like the Super C unless you use a two row planter. Even row spacing is very important when using a two row cultivator. If you plant one row at a time you will need to use row markers so that your rows are even enough to use a two row cultivator.

Go with the Super C if you want to cultivate two rows at a time. The Super C has plenty of power for cultivating, spins around on a dime and there are several varieties of cultivator. You should be able to find a good unit for less than $2,000.

I have a Massey-Harris Pony with cultivators and a Farmall Super AV with cultivators. Both work for me but the SAV has 27" clearance and about twice the horsepower.

For your size the larger h.p. would work better.

Don't get a cub. Rather go to walmart & get a Murray. They have more horsepower.
Seriously, many years ago we farmed with a cub.
very weak. Then we had a Super A. It was a much better tractor. THen a 40 John Deere. Even better. And it will cultivate two rows, Or one. And it already has 3pt hitch.

A C or super C will also fill your needs.

HUB, I own three Cubs and it IS a fine little tractor specificly designed for cultivating and built approximately 2/3 the size of the A. A Cub will do the job , but a Super A ,100,130,or 140 will do it easier. The Super A is the tractor of choice of asparagus growers in California. It can be loaded down to twice its weight for planting and holds up to the load . The Super A has more ground clearance and twice the power. I'd go with the Super A,100,130,or 140. Stay away fron the A unless you don't mind a manual lift ( a pneumatic lift on the A is so so if it even works ). If you want a copy of an article on using the Super A for growing asparagus send your mailing address, I'll mail a copy. Good luck. John

Any of the tractors you mention will work fine. I would also recommend the Farmall Cub. The seat is offset to the side so you can see everything in front of you. Most all of the attachments mount in the middle for good visibility. It is one of the handiest tractors that you can buy to do the type of garden work you want to do. Most Cubs start out at about $1500 and up. The more attachments that come with the tractor the more you can expect to pay.
