Changing main bearings

I was going to buy new main bearings for a 450 diesel, but I just saw in the M postings he said you can't change rear one? I assumed you could change them all. It would suck if it has to be split because I just put a new clutch in. Also I don't think I would want to replace all except one since it would not be even then.

Thought about replacing some without removing crank before, but so far always ended up removing the crank. Studied doing it when considering it. Looks like IH left enough room in the rear engine plate to do the rear main with crank in on both a gas and diesel. Remove oil pan then the flat plate bolted to rear engine plate. Then steel plate over part of the main bearing cap by removing the 4 bolts that retain plate to lower half of seal retainer.Rear engine plate overlaps the bolt heads some but enough distance was left below bolt heads to remove. That's why they used the flat plate on forward side of rear plate to cover the space left to remove bolts. May need a new gasket and seal plugs when putting plate over main cap back on.

Thanks, I noticed that plate and figured it
could be done without splitting. The guy
that said you can't replace rear main
bearing on a M must not know what he's
talking about.
