W-9 ring gear

I pulled the motor to replace the front and rear seals, got that done. Its no wonder the rear main was leaking, it was hard as a rock. Waiting on the throwout and pilot bearings to show up so the motor can be slid back in.

Since I have it apart, thinking about moving the ring gear to a different location for the starter to engage at. There are two opposing dowel pins for the flywheel, will it only fit back on at one location or can it be put back on 180 degrees different from before? And FYI, that flywheel is one heavy SOB!

If thats not an option, can the ring gear be heated off, flipped over and reinstalled? The ring gear isnt really worn bad but a little. I have it apart, might as well make it last longer.

you need to do as jim says, as i am pretty sure only one side of the teeth are beveled for engagement. the other side is flat. the teeth can
also be fixed up with a small grinder if not worn to much.
and flywheel only goes on one way.

Jim - after heating it, will I be able to rotate it or will it need to be knocked off and dropped back on? I would think knocked off but Ive never did one before.

The gear can be heated (oxy acetylene, using a #9 or bigger, Or a cutting tip (not cutting) to bring it to about 400 to 475 degrees (not red at all) This needs to be done in a circular motion
all around the ring so expansion is pretty uniform. A helper with a big screw driver to turn it against a bolt (installed to be in the right place) would be my choice of tactics. Quick
heating keeps the FW from expanding, promoting easy turning. Keep it against the flange to assure alignment. Jim
