Electrical System Wiring Question

I have never messed with replacing or re-wiring an electrical system on any old tractor and just got a 1953 Super M I recently purchased hauled home. It is currently still the original 6 volt system and at least for now I will keep it as is until I fine tune a few other items on the ole gal. As I replace any wires that are in need of it, I wanted to make sure to use the correct type of wiring so as to not disturb the system or cause shorts or overheating. Any suggestions as to what type of wiring and such I should be looking to get ahold of? Thanks!

I recommend type THWN (or THWN-2) oil and water-resistant wire. I rewired both a Super H and Super M with THWN about 15 years ago - both are holding up fine.

For wire sizinng, use #10 or #12 for generator "A" to regulator "GEN"; regulator "BAT" to ammeter; and ammeter to battery (starter saddle switch). All other wiring can be #14.

Well that will be a rough job on a M as you only have three wires out across the engine , one black 14 ga. to the coil a blue in 10 Ga to the gen, and a yellow 14 to the field on the gen .

You can go to Ace hardware and buy various colors and guages of wire by the foot. In lieu of plastic wire loom to protect it, you might consider some liquid tight or some metal clad conduit particularly if you have to run wire to a rear light. If Ace doesn't have it then Lowe's does.

It sounds like you may be considering converting to a 12 volt system in the future. If so I would recommend going a 10 ga wire for the Battery wire to the regulator and the circuit on back to the amp meter and over to the feed point on the starter switch. That way if you convert to 12v that heavier wire can connect to the alternator output post and will take the higher charging output.
