Farmall 400 t/a adjustment issue

Read thru the manuals that I have for the tractor. My limited t/a experience is only from my IH 560D & this 400. The 560 did pull the bush mower around the barn yard till the Farmall H with belly mower came along. Didn't really use the t/a on the 560.
Didn't notice any issue with the clutch or t/a on the 400. When handle is pulled back tractor slows down & speeds up with it ahead. Don't have a lot of use for the t/a, it grades the driveway & loader work around the yard. Meaning like lifted a dead tree, lift something heavy, etc.
Clutch adjusted is 7/8\" between pedal & housing like book says. It pushes nicely with no grinding of gears. According to the manual, the t/a is out of adjustment. So adjusted it, holy cow it the clutch pedal really hard to push now! Does this mean the t/a is worn out? I brought this tractor used couple years ago & don't know much of its history.
Thanks, Scott.

Can't comment on the degree of difficulty
you are having pushing the pedal,
however...it will be harder to push with
the TA ahead. Pull it back and see if the
clutch is lighter. If the TA is working
well, as you say, and you don't have
trouble shifting gears, leave it be.

65 years of wear and tear means if you adjust it by the book, it will be out of adjustment. You have to compensate for wear and tear by adjusting it by "feel" to a certain degree.

On these tractors when you push the clutch, at about half clutch pedal travel, you are also shifting the TA into low if everything is working properly. This is to release the binding that happens with the TA in direct when you push the clutch.

When you have to pull the TA lever to shift, or you have to jam the shifter out of gear, that means your TA is out of adjustment.

I adjust a worn set of linkages so that the pedal releases the shifter when pushed down 1/3 the distance to the full pedal travel from the place where the main clutch begins to move the tractor. Set the master clutch freeplay, to spec (about 1 inch from the platform measured at the point where the pedal arm touches the platform). Next, tape a wooden 12" ruler next to the clutch arm so it sticks out forward past the pedal about 6 inches. With clear space ahead of the tractor, put it in first direct, and let out the clutch slowly. as you begin to move note the location of the beginning of tractor movement on the ruler (the number doesn't matter, it only allows you to know where the clutch starts to move the tractor.)
Stop the tractor, and mark that spot on the ruler.
With it shut off, and looking at the ruler, note how far it is from that mark, to fully pushed pedal. Set the TA clutch so it releases at 1/3 that distance. This setting allows the pedal push to release both clutches when pushed (correctly) to its travel stop, and assures that the TA clutch is fully engaged before the master clutch begins to move the power into the gears.
