Engine swap

I have a 1964 Loadstar 1600 with 304 V8 and was wondering if any Diesel engines would replace it without a lot of machine work. Any help or insight appreciated.

They use to come with the 354 Perkins as a option, anyway i had a custom combiner who had a Loadstar with one in it,he didnt buy it new but said it came with the diesel in it!!!

If you do it you will have to accept the fact that the truck will be much slower. My dad drove the first semi truck our small town grain elevator bought. It was a late 60s single axle IH Load Star with 392 gas V8. If I remember right top governed speed of the engine was 32 or 3600 rpm. So I suspect the same applies to the 304. You probably won’t find many Diesel engines that will be set to that top rpm and still hold together very well. The only way to remedy the issue is to also change the rear axle ratio.

I H DV550 is an International truck engine based on the V8 549 gasser. It is a high speed engine, supposed to be an easy swap without changing rear axle gears. Annoying feature is that it drops to running on 4 cyl at idle.
Around 1980 it was replaced with the 9Liter V 8,also a high speed engine. Basically the same thing, but didn't drop cyl at idle. Pretty much bullet proof, quick take off from stop. Worked for a while in a school bus shop, had about 40 or 50 of them in 77 seat busses.

Ok, he had no reason to make up a story, i always believed him, He always drove that himself,Thanks for the information, But the 806-1206 [361] wouldn't fit, because the starter would be in the cab of the truck,LOL!!
