1968 IH 544 hydro transmission slipping

Hello,
I have a 1968 IH 544 Hydro that will intermittently stop going forward. If I don't quickly pull back on the speed lever, or press the dump pedal it will jerk back to going forward. Reverse works fine. bucket, PTO, 3pt. all work fine. I have drained and replaced the transmission fluid with a new filter. Air was purged by moving the speed lever to full forward (while in neutral) and then to reverse. Did this for 5 seconds forward and reverse several times. The engine does work harder in forward when doing this procedure. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Check you Foot and Inch pedal. Mine will stick down,it looks like it is up but if you stick your toe under it it will start working again.(656H)

The engine laboring more in forward than reverse is normal, especially once the S-R lever is moved past the blue line which moves the motor swash plate to gain faster ground speed.

What it sounds like you have going on is the S-R lever is not keeping the drive selector spool engaged in the forward drive position. The anchor on the spool is adjustable.

Try this, drive the tractor at the S-R lever position where the problem occurs most often, grab the lever and move it sideways to see if you can make it disengage and re-engage.

If so, loosen the clamp bolt and move the anchor on the spool until it will stay engaged in forward. Also make sure the cowl is solid and the slotted plate is parallel to fore-aft lever movement .

sounds like the same problem that my 826 hydro had. it would stop going forward, and lurch forward when I grabbed the hydro lever. I finally realized that the lever was not pulling the shaft out far enough to keep the forward side engaged, unless I held the lever against the right side of the slot. temporarily solved with a bungee cord holding the lever toward the tractor centerline. still need to find the adjustment under the cowl.

Jim, I replied before I read your response. I think we are on the same track. Is the spool anchor located on the shaft at the bottom
of the F-R lever? I need to adjust mine, just haven't figured out where.
I had a similar problem on a 656 hydro, after the fiberglass cowl cracked.

I have attached adjustment instructions from the small frame service manual. large frame adjustments are similar.
