Cub belly mower

Hello. I am asking for advice and I know i will get what I'm looking for. I have a 1949 Cub and I want to purchase a belly mower. I have found two different ones. One is a 42 inch deck and the other is a 59 inch, both Woods mowers. i was told that if I wanted a finish mower that I would have to get the 59 inch deck as the 42 inch is only good for tall brush. Won't the 42 inch also cut like a riding mower? I really don't want to have to pay a lot of money for the larger deck. Please advise. Thanks.

Good afternoon:
I have a 1956 Cub LOBOY with a 42 inch belly mower. I think a larger mower would be too much for my engine. Just my opinion.

Our 42" woods belly mower on our cub has bush hog style blades; Short blades on the perimeter of a round hub. It cuts very well but does not cut as even as our 72" rear woods finish mower on our IH 140. I would probably go with the 42" so you could mow at a faster speed.

My dad's Cub and 42" Woods mower gives a very good cut-off quality. These things weren't designed to be brush mowers - they were designed to mow grass. I would think that an early model Cub would be seriously under-powered with a 59" deck if you were mowing grass with any height.

I'm looking for something that can cut grass like a riding mower and was told the 42 inch is for brush and the 59 is a finish mower. I just need to know can the 42 cut like a finish mower.

My 1948 Cub with its 42 Woods is my only lawn mower here on the farm. I have used it for the past three years since coming back to the farm. It may not be as perfect as some finish mowers but if you dont cut too short and keep the blades sharp, it does a really nice job on the lawn. I mow in 2nd gear and have hills to climb, it does just fine. I wouldnt put a bigger mower on it, it would take an A for a 59 in my opinion. At least at my place.

I have used a 1950 Cub with a 59" Woods belly mower for over 25 years. It cuts very nicely in 2nd gear, but you may have to drop to 1st in very heavy grass, but for yard work it does nicely.

there are many many Cubs with the Woods59 finish mowers they will do a fine job mowing your yard better with turf tires saves cutting up yard finding the mower with mounts for the Cub will be the problem you would have better luck finding the Cub with the mower all in one package

In my mind its all about the grass.

If you cut approximately weekly with average rainfall, dont fertilize, then a 3 spindle Woods 59 is going to be no problem. I have done this for several years here where I live.

I recall my Grandpa's Fcub fitted with the 42 when I was a kid of about 12, that would chomp thru grass 6" tall whereas my 59 in the same situation would be no-way.

If you cut sporadically or like to pour the nitrogen to it, or let the grass grow until you can see the seeds on it then I recommend the Super A with the same 59" deck.

Have to agree, it all depends on the grass you are mowing and how often you do it.

With the 72 inch mower on my BN most of the time I can mow in 3rd gear, heck if the lawn was soother I could do it in forth! But there are a few parts of the lawn where in the wetter years I have had to resort to making half a swath in first gear!

Clay:

I mowed 29 years with a Cub Lowboy . Effective last year , I mow with Kubota G4200 diesel. The Kubota spins fast ,much like a Z turn ; the Cub [ 42 Inch Woods ] , IMO, mows prettier than the Kubota. The heavier Woods blades are just more efficient. That's my story :>) . Now if I could just get that Kubota diesel in my Cub .
