The original subject was "Re: IH 684 Fuel Tank Removal?".

Just removed my tank and my tractor has rops/canopy. The Rops most definitely has to come off. Its easy to remove, 3 bolts each side, but is heavy so use a lift or chain/rope to a tree etc... All the bolts but 2 in the tank are not bad to get off. There are 2 hidden up in the frame of the fixed rops that is bolted to frame of tractor that are a booger to get off. We used a wrench on one side with a man on the otherside slipping a screwdriver in the small space behind rops frame and fender to pry wrench off nut and enabling me to slip the wrench back on the nut and turn it a tiny bit over and over! Needless to say it took awhile but can be done.

Thank you for the reply. My brother's 684 doesn't have a ROPS so it should be easier. We had to do the outer left axle bearing on his CIH 495 with a ROPS and we had to take off both wheels as the wheels were set in narrow position and could not get a wrench on the ROPS bolts on the axle, then we had to remove the lower part of ROPS frame that was bolted to the axles as two of the fender bolts were under the ROPS frame, then we took the deck plate off unbolted all the fender connections, unplugged wiring harness, disconnected fuel lines and lifted the complete assembly fuel tank, fenders using the other tractor with FEL with bale spear through the upper part of the ROPS.
This fall after he is finished with the 684, we will trouble shoot the right brake to see if it is the brake O-rings leaking or something else.

I pulled the fuel tank on the 495 left the fenders and lower ROPS brackets in place. Just lifted the top hoop clear.

Mechanic did rear wheel bearing on same tractor, fuel tank, fender and entire ROPS were left in place, he unbolted the wheel, ROPS to trumpet bolts and removed the trumpet bolts and it came clear. Saved a lot of labour on the bill.

Hi 495man, was it right or left outer wheel bearing?
We did the left outer wheel bearing and we looked at trying to take the axle housing off without ROPS, fenders and fuel tank but on the left side there were two hydraulic lines from under the seat to the MCV
that had to come off to access the bolts on the axle housing and also to allow the axle housing to be removed. My brother consulted a former IH Mechanic and he said the same on left side with ROPS just easier
to lift the whole ROPS, fenders and tank out of the way.
You are very correct it took us more time to remove and install the ROPS, fenders and tank than change the axle bearing.

It was the right side. I was surprised he was able to do it.
