F12 Transmission & Steering Gear 600W Super Cylinder Oil

Time to purchase oil for F-12 transmission and steering. I suppose people just use SAE90 now? I contacted an oil supplier, told them what the tractor is and they suggested 600W Super Cylinder oil. I checked the specifications of that oil and it does seem pretty close to the old SAE 160. It has a copper strip corrosion rating of 1B, which I believe is very low. Is there any reason not to use it? Any advice much appreciated.

I think Mobil 600W "steam cylinder oil" is now discontinued but replaced by the MobilGear SHC series. Seems like the 600W is ISO480 but I can't recall what that translates to in the MobilGear series.

I got 1 gallon from McMaster Carr for use in my worm gear transmission in my Troy Bilt tiller and my Dad's snowblower worm gear transmission.

I went and looked in the shop yesterday. The oil is Mobilgear 600 XP 480.

Essentially a modern, synthetic version of the old 600W "Steam cylinder oil".

The one oil I would recommend against is 80W90 or 85W140 which are "rear axle" oils with EP-additives. The Extreme Pressure additives are for steel-on-steel and slowly corrode copper-based metals like bronze. I believe you are on the correct track of using a low copper-strip corrosion rating.

Thank you! I'll see what Mobil can provide. They still have 600W Super Cylinder oil on their list here, but it may be another thing to actually get it! The 600 XP480 is probably what they will send.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke with the Mobil representative and they sell 600W Super Cylinder Oil in 4 imperial gallon pails (4.8U.S. gallons) or 44 imperial gallon drums (52.8 U.S. gallons). I think I'll go for the 4 gallon pail, the big drum is expensive!
