Double vented gas cap questions....

I read the link to the free gas cap page in the last post about them. It says they are required for gasoline fueled tractors. Do I need one for my kerosene H? I do plan on running it on that fuel. Also, it says the new style gas cap was available in 1980. Is that accurate? My gas 806, one of the early ones built in '63, has one. It's needed due to the filler hole being recessed under the hood. There's also one on my 560 which is diesel. That has the same cap. As far as I can tell, those caps have been around since the 40/60 series. Why is the site claiming they were available in 1980? Was that a revised cap? Sure looks the same as what's on my 560 & 806.

Thanks,
Mike

Think those tractors came with tall cap with one vent hole, cap 361910R91. In 1962 IH parts merchandiser was saying use that cap on all farm tractors built 1939 to present. Not sure how long they used them from factory after that before change.

I changed out the one on my MH44 to same type, my opinion is they help when tank is full, not so much when not.

I would not worry about a less flammable fuel.

The tall triple baffle cap was used on late H/M production, think around 1950 or '51. The Super H& SM and 300/350/400/450 had them, and 460/560. The '86 series had a different style cap on their rear mounted tank.
The newer "reformulated gasoline" was used as justification for the free cap program, it expanded more when heated during normal operation on hot days. I very seldom put over 10 gallons of gas in either my Super H (17 gal tank) or M (21 gal tank), I have NO problem with pressurized gas in either tractor.

IH was the only company that used the tall gas cap. But sounds like others could have used it.

They had "tall" gas caps but they weren't the same as the "triple baffle" gas caps you get from the recall.

I remember back in 1980 when the original recall hit. In a rare display of "generosity" our IH dealer provided three new gas caps for us, free of charge; one for the Super M, one for the 560, and one for the 756. All gas tractors.

This is a dealer that would take the fenders off a new tractor on the lot, but not off the invoice, then sell the farmer back the fenders he'd already paid for.
