340 transmission grinding

Good afternoon. I have a new-to-me 340 without TA. When I attempt to put it in gear, I will step on the clutch and move the shifter just like on my H. However, when I do so on the 340, the gears grind. If I wait with the clutch down for 20-30 seconds, I can slide it into gear without grinding. Any insight as to why it does this or what I should be checking is appreciated. Thanks, Dave

The trans is likely filled with hytran fluid. It is near 10 weight oil. The H has 90wt. oil. The gears running in the oil are slowed by viscous friction much more in the H. If you push down the clutch when starting, and still have the problem, the pilot bearing may be dragging. I own a 350U and have a 400 in the family. I have just raked it into gear after a few seconds, and it is still not giving problems. If it only does it when shifting from neutral, I would just wait some. Also check the level of fluid in the trans to be sure it is not low. If low it will spin for a while. Jim

As Janicholson said below about the hy tran- because the transmission is the hydraulic reservoir. What I do is start it in gear, from the seat of course, and put it the appropriate gear. If you have to let it idle in neutral, you learn to be patient. Also it will grind less if you try to put it 5th and then put it what gear you actually want. Mark.

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I should have stated up-front that this is a 340U, and yes, the transmission is filled with hy-tran. It only grinds at start-up, and afterwards seems OK, so I will take everyone's word for it that is this "normal." Thank again, Dave41A
