Hello, I had a fun day yesterday replacing the ignition switch with a "good enough" aftermarket switch. This will be the third in about 5 years.

I have been thinking about converting to a key switch and solenoid. Also would convert to 12v system as well.

What parts would fit nicely for the key switch system? I found a key switch for a 140/240 that looks it would fit the dash hole 5/8".

Tractor is a batt ignition. Thanks

No issues. You may need a starter set up with a battery cable bolt instead of the button type. I converted an M to key start, used a 400
starter.at the same time it was converted to 12v with a GEM/Delco one wire alternator and rewired.5 years later,no issues o rregrets.

The key switch for a 140/240 simply turns on the ignition. If you want a "twist the key to start" setup like a car, you need a different switch.

Your starter has a contact button on it. It is soldered in. You will need to unsolder that contact button and replace it with a threaded stud to use a solenoid system. If you are not careful you can unsolder more than the stud, rendering the starter inoperable.

As an aside, EVERYTHING is made in China, including the solenoid and key switch, so you're going to be looking at similar longevity and reliability concerns.
