IH 504 Tachometer

When I took this apart the drive pulls out of the holder easily. When reinstalled, the tach cable inserts, but it pushes the drive inward toward the drive gear as though the end of the drive goes past the drive gear and does not engage.

Is there supposed to be a snap ring inside the holder? It seems like something should hold the drive in the holder.

There is a flat "key" that slips into the slot on the holder and groove on the gear shaft.

Thanks for clearing that up...I figured there had to be something there. I will have to get the magnet out to see if I can find it.
