I have my top cover loose but i want to remove the shifter. The manual says to " remove the expansion plug from one end of the gear shifter lever swivel shaft hole and drive out the shaft". i have a part manual and im not sure what they are talking about. i do see a pin is that what i drive out dont want to break any thing.

That big socket that the shift lever is in,pound out the pin, pull out the shifter and you can see what else is in there, you can buy that swievel, etc, it will tighten up after that new one is installed !

The little rivet at the spring is not what you want. It is just below the bell going over the trans casting. If just pulling the lid to clean you can get to the bottom form the bottom. There are 3or 4 bolts hold the rails and mechanism to the bottom of the lid. Need to watch out for losing the detent springs and balls that way though. You can wash it up pretty good as it is without taking apart unless you have a problem there.

heres a picture of the pin you need to drive out. this is on a 53 super m. my older ms have a tin welsh plug over the pin. use a 3/8 or 1/2 inch drift to drive the pin out. in a pinch a long bolt held with a vice grip will work. iirc, you can drive it in toward the steering post and it should clear

the more i think about it, that may be the tin cap. drive in a little on it and the cap near the steering post pops off, then drive the pin back the other way and the other cap will pop off, continue till the pin comes out. been a long time since i took one apart.

Thanks to all didnt want to damage any thing. my parts manual wasnt much help till i googled the part # then it showed all the parts your talking about. stay tune for more question thanks again , mike
