Ih 300 utility

Hi, we are having problems with our power steering not working unless we are working the lift arms or using the remote any ideas why that would be

Have you checked the level in the reservoir? It might be just low enough that the returning fluid from the cylinders is just enough. The other option is the part of the steering gear box that "senses" when
you are trying to turn is not working. What power steering unit is on your 300?
Here's an example of a Behlin power steering unit I found on ebay with a good picture. https://imgur.com/a/KHOQKFm Does your unit have a manufacturer name in the casting or a plate with the name/model# ? I
didn't see a good parts diagram in the couple minutes searching on google, but with the manufacturer and/or model number you might have better luck.

If I remember correctly the 300's didn't come with power steering from the factory, but I could be wrong.

There is a priority valve in the Regulator safety valve sandwiched between the rear hydraulic valve aid the under seat reservoir. The problem is that
the priority valve is open, giving no pressure to the steering. WHen you operate a valve into no outlet, or the hitch up as far as it will go, the
pressure builds and the steering works. This is the valve, you need a service manual to dive into it. Jim

Yes they do come factory with power steering units and the other key fact is that I pulled this power unit out of another 300. And this is why it is stumping me as to why it work on the other tractor but not this one, it should have been plug and play

A small bit of scle or metal particle is likely keeping the power steering pressure at near zero unless "created" by deadheading a different circuit.
If you still have access to the donor tractor the safety regulator valve may fix it. Jim

We have tried a few more ideas from other people that has had problems but we are still getting the same issue no power steering without deadheading or using a remote. It is puzzling us because obviously the unit should have worked on the donor and it should have been a simple plug and play onto our tractor. Any other ideas would greatly be appreciated

If there is no PS pressure, and the pump only loads the engine to pressurize the hydraulics, the issue is in gne safety regulator
valve block. The priority valve is probably stuck. If you do not want to take it apart, you could put a belt driven pump from a
car on it, but that is harder to do than fixing the valve on a 300, because of space limitations. Jim

It sounds like you moved a Behlen power steering unit from one tractor to another. Did you also move this little plug? The pictures are from Farmall row crop tractor and I quite sure the utility tractor is the same.
