What causes the block,on a H Farmall to crack out in the oil pump bolt holes, it's held on with two bolts, one is cracked on both sides, there is enough room to weld it, and still accept the pump! Does the bolt bottom out, or overtightening cause it crack it ?

A smashed oil pan could do it, so could a broken rod from a prior failure. Something getting into the drive gear might be a thought. Jim

I dont think the engine was ever apart, except when my son did, when he was in high school shop class, 20 years ago, crank is standard, it had the cast iron pistons yet when he opened it, his shop teacher was no mechanic, and tried to put it together with no torque wrench, ish, shame on me for allowing him to do it. The oil pan is nice, no wrinkles!

If the correct bolt was put into a blind hole and the hole had oil in it, the hydraulic pressure of the bolt threading in can burst the casting. I would weld it up, grind it flat, put the pump in and use a transfer punch to locate the center, pilot drill then tap drill, then tap the hole. Jim

Shop teachers and welding teacher both a common problem of them not being any thing but a teacher with no clue. I still remember when my step son was taking a welding class in high school his teacher would only let them weld with 6011 rod. The step son brought in his own rod 7014 and could weld circles around his teacher with it but because it was not the 6011 rod he did not get a good grade even though the welds where better and stonger

Do you know if when your son rebuilt it was the engine taken out? If so Jim’s theory is probably correct. The engine was positioned so the crank was up and before the oil pump was put on it likely was filled with oil. Then as it was being bolted on the threaded holes for the pump got oil in them. Then as they were tightened by a novice the blind hole was hydraulically broke out by the force of the trapped oil.

It was a in frame overhaul, they didnt have a crane or anything like that, i went to the shop class once and visted, while the tractor was there!

I've never had a hole with oil crack a hole out yet. We oil every thing pretty well. I've had holes full of oil and screwed bolts in. I guess I was lucky or the thread had lots of slop. The oil always squeezed out around the bolt as it went in.

I've seen it twice, once a "fast mechanic broke a short block putting an small block Ford together. It was a head bolt that blew a chunk of block into the cylinder. It would not turn (duh). and one on an alloy small engine head bolt, this time out the side. in the fins. Jim
