Farmall 450 Tach

My Tachometer does'nt work. I can disconnect at the distributor housing and make it work with a drill. I have removed the plastic gear inside the distributor housing and other than being nasty with old grease it looks fine. I cleaned it up and installed but nothing. Any suggestions

Take the end from the distributor and spin it in your fingers the needle should bounce. If not then it is from the distributor to the tach head. Try both ways to make sure you didn't spin it the wrong way. Will not hurt it if you did. I would not put a drill on it and try that might if the wrong way. IF the needle doesn't bounce then head is suspect or the cable end.

Pull about 6 inches of it out and then stick the square end in the drive gear. See if it still engages properly with the square drive hole in the gear. Sometimes they get to rounded off. Auto parts stores used to carry universal replacement speedometer cables. Just the inside drive part. You cut to length and crimped a new drive end on. Some had plastic ends that you shrunk in place with a match or lighter.
