Hello,

John Carter, new member here. I'm the proud owner of my grandfathers 706 gasser. Recently, while putting around, I suddenly saw what I though was smoke emitting from around the throttle. It was actually a fine mist of hydraulic fluid, I looked down hydraulic oil was puddling around my feet. I shut down, then started briefly to try to identify where it was leaking from. There was oil pouring down one of the steel hydraulic lines leading to the orbital pump.
I figured that one of the steel lines had rusted through. Pulled the lines and pressure test with compressed air at home and cannot find any leak.

Now, I'm scratching my head. If the lines are intact, which they appear to be, what should I investigate next?

Thank you very much for any ideas.

John

The line could well have a pin hole leak and air is not enough pressure to open it up. 120 PSI does not do things 1500 plus PSI will do

Thank you

I believe I will reassemble, top off hydraulic oil, bring a mirror and see if I can find the source.

1500 psi - that's significant.

That is low pressure compare to some systems. The older A/C system had up wards of 3000PSI

More then likely it is the shaft seal under the steering wheel. Vary easy fix . Here is what you need , ya need a 1/4 28 bottoming tap a steering wheel puller , a hammer , two 1/4 28 bolts at least 6 inches in length a 1 and 1/8th socket a breaker bar or impact a set of snap ring pliers . You remove the nut then ya retap the puller holes install the puller and bolts and apply pressure and once you have the puller good and tight give it a sharp rap with the hammer and it will pop off . Next remover the wheel and then the snap ring , take the steering wheel and place it back on the splines and give a sharp fast turn in either direction and the seal and bushing SHOULD pop out , replace with new install the snap ring and install the wheel and nut All done .

IT is more than likely one of the 2 things either the top seal is now leaking which I doubt since you said it was running down from underneath the hand pump. Other is the bottom seal or vaccum cleaner belt as I refer to it as. If the bottom is leaking the hand pump has to come out to be repaired. The bottom plate has to come off to accomplish this task. Some of those hand pumps have to be kept in time when you do this job when it is apart. Also some have a wider belt then others within the same model. Like our 1466there are 2 widths of the bottom rubber deal (vaccum belt).
