The question about the M block....

Brought me to wonder, how long did IH use that block in tractors & equipment? Would they been used in the construction line? If the latest D Slater
might have seen is '68, I wonder if they would have been producing that block in '71. That would be the next "S". Which brings me to another question,
did IH stick with the date codes until their demise?

Think the date codes were used on some things to 1985. A was used in 55 and A used again in 76. Some letters were skipped. 248 engines were used on some things later than a Farmall M. But before S come around again replacement blocks were using a R suffix or maybe C suffix. Have seen the cast number ending C-1 on heads. Don't know how it how it came about but one replacement block casting 365586R1 can have C-248 on it, or C-264, or C-281 in the normal raised letters on the block. Same block on inside as others that accept 4-1/8 sleeves even with C-248 on it. When something like that is used as a replacement for a 248 it will have a note in parts or a bulletin saying will work for 6722DJ casting number of a M block if so many parts are added.

Didn't think to add the last tractor I had with a 365586R1 block had a date code of 7-5-66. Had another one with a 58 date code in a SM. It had C-281 on it. Other had C-248. Can't find the date code of one in a 450 if I wrote it down. It had C-264 on it.

Oh, that explains much. I
ordered a new skeleton block for
my H from the Parts Depot a few
years back & got a C-175
instead. Not sure if I'll use
it. It's for my '39 H. Not
exactly original. Might have to
figure out if I can get the
pistons out of the old block &
see if there's any damage to it.
It sat out in the elements for a
couple decades with the valve
cover off & no muffler.
