560 fuel filters....

Trying to figure out which which is which. One filter is paper & the other one kind of looks like a ball of binder twine. The owners, maintenance & parts manuals are of no help. The filters I pulled out of there & tossed a while ago already, were two shorty filters stacked up in both canisters. So, four total. Not sure that's right. Anyway, an internet search just wants to sell me more filters & has been about as useful as a straight boomerang. Normally it will send me here if I have an issue. Not so this time.

Thanks,
Mike

The paper is the primary and the ball if string one is the secondary. I would think they would be tall enough to fit singly into the canister. Unless there are parts missing inside.

I wonder if the lids were switched around. The initial canister off of the tank has a washer on the bolt & the second does not. I'm going to guess that washer is ment to hold the string type filter in the second one?

The cotton one is primary (first) filter and paper is final. Both should have spring loaded washer holding down on top of filter other wise fuel will just go around the filter.

IH went to the cotton filter due to premature plugging of paper filters from slime etc. You can use paper in both if you are confident your fuel has no algae bloom or other slimy crud some caused by moisture in fuel.

Two donut filter sounds like a will fit fix someone came up with. Only narrow donut filters I am aware of in IH system was the second try IH made at hydraulic filters in the 560's. First filter was just screen, second was screen with two donut paper filters inside ( a field change we installed in tractors with tele depth hitch but standard on all new ones shortly) and then they came with the all paper hydraulic filter with screen bypass that function is to allow oil to flow through the screen with cold oil or plugged paper filter.

That's what those little filters reminded me of, the ones for the hydraulic system. Not sure if those had the IH logo on them. The ones I removed did not. There wasn't any name or number on them & seemed to have been in there a long time, judging by the crud & goop.

The lid for the secondary filter is missing a washer. Will any old washer do?

Better listen to Pete 23, the cotton ball filter is the PRIMARY filter, it also grabs any moisture out of the fuel.

Would make NO sense to put the low micron paper filter first, then the high micro cotton ball filter after it!

Was thinking that the cotton filter was to maybe get the chunks out & the paper one was for the fine particulates. Makes sense. I did not know that
about the moisture though. Interesting. Had always wondered why there wasn't some sort of water filter or trap on these old diesel engines.

Now all I have to do tomorrow is pop the filters in, weasel the injector lines back on & make sure everything else checks out. Then it will be time to
add fuel, try to get the air out of the system.... & post back here askin', "now why don't this darned thing start?". Lol!
