Farmall M - lubrication filling time

Hola,

Been a while waiting for all the gaskets and various parts to arrive but the day has finally come to fill up the old M and put her in the field.

With that being said - I plan on using 15w40 in the engine but for the rear end and steering worm gear anyone have thoughts?

I can grab 90wt or 80/90 for the rear end but is there an alternative I should use?

Same question for the front end.

The belly pump is not installed so no hydraulic fluid - and she is now 12v so no more generator - but I feel like I am missing a fluid somewhere? Coolant is all done.

Thanks 😀

Only thing you forgot was the Champagne and Beer LOL! Best used after tractor use and you have already divulged that you are not a drinker just using the name as an eye catcher. Since you have no hydraulics you have darn near one of the simplest machines around. No brake fluid, no power steering fluid, no refrigerant and batteries are supposed to be maintenance free. Only thing you didn’t mention is the grease zerk lube points at the various locations.

Have you had the front grill off, the steering sector, would be nice if you could ,maybe take the flat gear out, add a thin washer if you need one, chances are u dont, wipe it clean and install some new 80-90, or corn head grease in there !

80/90;85/140 in the rear end, steering gear. However, corn head grease can be used in the steering if the seal is leaking. You can also pump oil in the check plug hole with one of those 'bucket pumps' made for pumping oil from a 5 gal bucket.Hy-tran equavalent in the hydralic system. 15/40 oil in the engine. Or just use the same oil as you use in your other tractors;pickup, everything.Brand doesnt matter. As said before many times, todays worst/cheapest oils are far better than the very best available when the tractor was made. There was no such thing as 'MultiViscosity' oil,it wasn't invented yet. Tractor supply oil is quite adequet. It's all I use. Those old tractors are pretty tough and forgiveing.Dont worry if something is not 'perfect'. After all, they've survived 70+ years of hard work,hundreds/thousands of hours, often times with poor maintenance with few ill effects. So your light duty use and limited use wont matter.Main thing is to keep it full of oil and 'water'. Put it to work and enjoy. I know you are new and inexperienced.Sometimes you seem to 'overthink' things. We all had to learn, sometimes the hard way. Relax.Enjoy your tractor.

😀
Yup, zerk fittings are the last thing after she gets oil later today - excited to be finishing her up.
Will post some finshed picks when all is said and done. 😁

Hi Fast,

When speaking of regular gun grease - can you elaborate on what part of the tractor you are speaking to?

Only place I planned on using "gun" grease was the zerk fittings.

Thanks

Hi,

I did take the front grill off and did check the fluid in the steering worm gear - was a little low but looked good and didn't see any leaks.

Was going to fill with 80/90.

Thanks for the info.

Picked up T4 15/40 as that is what I am switching everything over to.

For the rear end - the store didn't have 15 gallons of 80/90 in 5 gallon pails, so they gave me all the 80/90 they had in quart, 1 gallon, 2 gallon etc bottles and sent me out the door at $150 bucks for 15 gallons (near $80 discount for the trouble).

Definitely gonna be my go to store moving forward 😀

Thanks for the tip - gonna have to check that out.

Filling the 806 with 18 gallons from the deck with a funnel was an exercise in clown-foolery with me doing it by myself so amy tips are always welcome.

Thanks! 😀
