Yes a M&W pump and a delco distributor. Looks like a power unit type dipstick. What is the cast number on engine block below the rear spark plug?

They ground the number off I was asking about just before the DJ. Probably was 6943DJ. Block was cast in 1949.

So would this have a 450 bore ? It has 450 manifold. Also did farmall dealers install these replacement engines?

Only way to know what bore is to pull the head and measure. It could be anything.

A 1949 block would be bored for C248 sleeves. I believe you could put in oversize pistons and sleeves to get to C264 with no additional machining. Machine work would be required to install C281 sleeves.

The block off plate is for a fuel pump, I would say. That is likely a power unit engine someone transplanted into your M at some point in its lifetime to replace a worn or broken original engine.

Of course we can never know for sure unless you find the person that did the work, and they remember doing it.

With the DJ on block it didn't come with the larger bore. If block doesn't have a serial number it was replacement block. Dealer installed or bought through parts. They used a replacement block that would fit most applications. Farmall M, W series, power unit ETC. Back at one time you could buy complete long block engines also. As time went along IH carried the last design manifold as a replacement for M through 450 tractors. If someone went to a dealer to purchase a M manifold in say 1960 the replacement part was the 450 type gas manifold for a M running on gas. Unless the dealer happened to have a M manifold on the shelf never sold.

I agree that the block off plate behind the carburetor looks to be for a fuel pump. The interesting part of that is
the location. Normally in most engine designs the fuel pumps are on the camshaft side of the engine. This is
because they are normally stroked by an eccentric on the cam. Has anyone seen one of these engines with a
fuel pump? If this is actually intended for a fuel pump they must bore a hole over to the cam for a plunger similar
to a small/big block Chevy.

I believe the dip stick was an add-on available or most Hs and Ms.
Changing the #1 sparkplug could be fun!

Yes a push rod went to camshaft. Only blocks with the cover plate are drilled for the rod to run through. All cams have the lobe.

Into part of the fifties for that series I think. At some point to keep from stocking so many different engines they went to replacement blocks only or blocks with pistons and sleeve. Replacement block for sure up to 67 on M to 450 gas blocks and think I seen a 68. Latest I noticed but could be more. Some castings IH must of decided they needed a few more castings made and had a different outside company make them later on. Not a lot around to see so can't say how long.. Know some heads were made like that.

So you Wouldn't know when the
engine was replaced because it's a
49 block but does mean it was put
in then right ?

No way to tell unless the owner at the time kept a record. Could be in a warehouse or parts system for who knows how long and installed after 49. Good bet it wasn't installed until at least 1950.

There is a number 4 stamped ware
it was grinded off behind oil

Lot of the replacement blocks have the cast numbers ground off and some have them stamped back in. In 49 a replacement block casting with head studs and cam bearings was 6943DJX. One including pistons and sleeves was 6943DJZ. Blocks wouldn't include the X or Z. Those letters were for part system to indicate what was included with a assembly.

IH had a (fire sale) so to speak on blocks and heads for M's etc in late 60's or early 70's when they closed a foundry I believe in France. My brother put in new head and block at very good price in 50 M and I now have that tractor. Maybe take a look for casting dates if I think of it sometime.

It has original size bore with the thin wall sleeve, flat top pistons as a 264.
