IH 424 diesel water pump

I am installing a new water pump on an IH 424 diesel.

The present cooling system has a thermostat bypass. The replacement water pump I got has no bypass. Is there anything special I should do besides plug off the bypass outlet in the thermostat housing?

I am prepared to drill a couple 1/4" or so holes in the thermostat to permit some circulation during warmup.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Well, the pump came today, and it had a bypass , so no modifications needed. Funny, because the pump had the same part number as one that is advertised be "without bypass".

On the other hand, nowadays it's seldom that generic parts are as described.

And many times have to be ground/modified/finished a bit to fit properly.

The hub on the new water pump is 1" closer to the engine than the original water pump. This means the fan will interfere with bypass hose and the idler pulley bolt. For this reason, I had to shim the fan out by an inch. I might have seen this coming if I'd been able to compare drawings of replacement water pump vs the original.

Knowing all this, I might have been persuaded to have to old pump rebuilt. Here's hoping someone else can learn from my experience.

Duly noted, as I have "424" diesel, as well.
