Farmall M fan belt sizing?

Hi All,

Went to get a new fan belt for the M, uaing the following part numbers, which all seem to reference different sizes, yet all are #'s for the M:

16131DA
69490DA
45983D

All are about 45 1/2 inches long, with minimal difference.

Well, even with the adjuster completely open I cannot get a 45" belt on - it is too short.

Gave Carquest the 69490DA number and they gave me a Gates TR30467 (7/8" X 47.25").

I got it on, it is a little proud on the crank pulley and adjusted up okay - but being 47 inches, am worried with stretch the adjuster won't take up the slack in the future and/or it is already to proud.

Thoughts on using the above-referenced belt?

If this is a no-go, gonna go back to a standard v-belt and no more of this cogged belt hooey.

Thoughts?

Well i think you got it, those belts last a long time, even when we farmed with a M, maybe all we tightened it was 2-3 times in 10 years !

Once a new belt is seated (engine's been run a few minutes) it will stretch very little more. Since you have the new belt successfully mounted/adjusted it should now work fine for many hundreds of hours.

FWIW I replaced the belt on my Super M about 20 years ago. It has not needed to be tightened despite running 40 - 50 hours every year since.

Those belts are big heavy and have lots of pulley to run on. So they don't need to be real tight to run fine for decades. I can't remember the last time we needed to tighten the belt on the MD or the H .

Belt stretch is a myth. The only way a belt will stretch is if you have it WAY too tight, I mean WAY too tight. You'll be taking out water pump bearings in no time if it's that tight, long before the belt stretches.

Properly installed belts get loose because they wear, not because they stretch.

I think I may have one in the barn still with the Gates packaging on it. Ill have to look when I get home to see what it has on it. All of mine st just below the edge of the pulley, and they arent very tight.

Hi John,

Thanks!

That is what I had originally but I couldn't get it on.

Had the adjuster backed completely out and still couldn't turn the crank to walk belt on.

Moved from that 45" belt to a 47" belt and she squeeked on - still had to walk it on by turning the pulley, but was doable.

That is what bothers me as I want the 45" belt on there vs this 47" belt.

I suppose its possible that either Gates changed the size of that belt for that number, which I have seen happen, or someone put the wrong belt in the packaging, but that belt, as noted by Duner, is almost 46" long, and should have fit. Therefore I would suspect something was not right with the belt.

ChampagneNBeer - So I have read through several of your posts as you have fixed up your M and I remember there being an issue with the numbers on the carb not matching the numbers of an M carb. Some said it was a W-4 or W-9 carb possibly?

I only really have experience with an M and this may be way out there, but is it possible more than just the carb may have been switched, like you may have a Frankenstein tractor?

I do remember switching my fan belt and it being snug to get on. I believe I bought mine at NAPA for about $30. You can actually search parts for a farmall on their site. In the add a vehicle category, select agriculture instead of Auto/Truck. Just looked up an oil filter for an AC WD45 on there last week.
