ebay shipping costs

I've spent some time over the past few months on ebay looking for used parts.I'm wondering how they have pre-calculated shipping costs. I was looking for a drawbar for my BN and one guy had one listed for a B which doesn't work on a BN but isn't going to be too much different in weight and wanted $112 shipping cost. I found one in a mid west salvage yard they charged me $25 shipping. Are there ebay guys making money off shipping besides the part or am I missing something?

Been working EBAY since 1990 and there are sellers trying to make money on shipping or don't know what they are doing . Always check shipping cost on any item . Also check their feedback .Too many negatives , stay clear .

I was selling some on e-bay for a while, Yes, I counted on making a little on shipping, but had no guilt over it because the buyer always had visibility before bidding as to what shipping was going to cost. E-bay has/had a program that calculated shipping cost from the sellers zip code to the bidder's Zip, given package size, weight, which shipper, etc. Fed-X has/had sweetheart deal on shipping cost through e-bay. Finally I quit e-bay because of their bait, free listing, and switch, charging for listing, tactic. Paying $77 one month when I didn't sell anything was a bit steep!

Ebay offers three options:

1. Calculated shipping. You input the package size, weight, and shipping method. They calculate the shipping in the listing depending on the viewer's address.

2. Fixed shipping. You put in whatever you want.

3. Free shipping. You eat the cost of shipping out of the final bid price of the item.

I usually offer free shipping, and adjust the price to approximately split the cost of shipping between me and the buyer.

I recently sold an item on ebay which was so large it required building a crate. I used calculated shipping on that, and for a 48x24x9 crate that weighed 76lbs, shipping cost was $40 from NY to KY. FedEx Ground. It was there in two days.

I have never been charged for listings that don't sell. They only charge 10% when the item sells.
