reversed connections while jump stating tractor

I tried to jump start my converted to 12 volt Super C and reversed the battery terminals. It did not arc on initial connection and I did not notice until smoke came out from behind switch. Now it will not start. What damage did I do?

I would start in succession and check the wiring on the back of the switch. If there's nothing obvious there, then down the line of components....switch, voltage drop if you have one, points, etc.

For a quick check, I would run a wire from the positive side of your battery and bypass the switch (tie into the wire that goes from your switch to the voltage drop) and hit the starter button. If you're lucky, all you did was fry some wiring.

If it has an alternator on it you will need to replace it because you let the smoke out of it

If it has an alternator, the diodes in the alternator will be conducting full force in the wrong direction. If the weakest wire in the connection to the alternator was fried, fixing that wire might make the repair.
Using a test light:
First charge the battery in the tractor. next, Hook it up using the negative ground
NAPA has one.

My friend did that to his JD last year, burned the diodes out of the alternator. His neighbor the parts changer changed the whole alternator. I put some red tape on the + battery cables to prevent it from happening again, the cables were both black and the + & - on the battery were very hard to see.
