Hot Coil!!!

I just finished mowing my two acres of grass with my '50 Cub and when I put it back in the barn noticed the coil was hot, real hot. Hot enough that I cannot keep my hand on it for more than a second to two. Is this normal? If not, what is making it get hot? Original 6v positive ground, possibly the original coil too. Thanks, Ron

Well think about it. You cannot hold your hand on the engine after you run it 2 hours and the coil is bolted on the side of the engine so yes it gets hot from the engine plus the way most electrical things work they do also get warm and some even hot. So yes the coil will get hot and hot enough that you cannot keep your hand on it for very long

To check the coil, put an amp meter on the input (engine off points closed) ignition on. The amps should be close to 4. if 5 or more it is probably going bad. Bad as in it will fail, or burn points. Jim
