2 different cranks in a early and late 340 135ci motor

need to order a set of rod bearings for my old International 340 utiity backhoe. there seems to be 2 different cranks ..an early one and a later I assume the early is the one that the mains are 2.244 inch and the later is the 2.624 inch . my motor has a 3.25 inch bore and stepped head pistons. I tried to order them here but they said I need to know what the main bearings size is to get the right ones . I cant measure the mains and dont want to lay underneath the backhoe and pull off a main cap to try and figure it out. so whats the difference

yes I have a gas motor. so they have a serial number of 100500 and an before that number is the early and serial number 100501 and later use the larger journal. well the thing is the serial numbers are not on the motor. they are on the trans next to the bell housing.and .motors can be changed after 60 years..mine has the stepped head pistons and so as long as the early smaller journal crank and the stepped head pistons cant be swapped with the other larger crank then it should be a early. so what is the difference in the 2 motors as far as the crank? the mains are larger ...ok but what is the difference about the rods that they require different bearings ? if it was size then I can check the size and I will know .in order to order the correct bearing I need to know beside the larger main bearings , what else can I check to make sure it is an early motor

The motor has its own serial number, stamped into a flat machined area on the side.

If you can't find it and aren't willing to do the detective work to find out for sure, all I can recommend is you order both sets of bearings so you have them when you go to do the work.

I use to own a 340, it's only 3 miles from here, but have you looked under No,1 spark plug, It's should be on that BOSS like Barnyard was talking about. Take some sand paper and and a can of either, to clean it off, you are looking for a engine serial number. It cant be on the bell housing, they have no idea which bell housing is going to be mated up with what engine at that stage of the game!

If you had a parts book, it would tell you what the tractor serial engine is, in what tractor ,and the serial number for that is attached to the bell housing!!!

just so you know when I need to get most 0f my info , I go to the online parts catolog for case, ford, Int , ect and I can usually see most of what I need to know . but the answer to what I needed to know I found out very easy searching online and the answer is the early cranks had a main bearing diameter of 2.244 and a rod bearing diameter of 1.810 , and that ended at serial number 100500 and those engines had the stepped head pistons. Starting with serial 100501 they used a crank that had a main bearing diameter of 2.624 and a rod diameter of 2.374 and probably standard flat top pistons. so I figured out what to buy and ordered it today. as far a manuals I work on many backhoes just not International. this is the way it goes .usually there is someone here pushing manuals and when you buy them sitting in the weeds for 10 years or more there is about everything that needs to be fixed on them, some I get manuals from the owners that I buy the the tractor from and some I order . but you just dont order a shop manual , on backhoes you end up buying a shop manual, a owners manual , a manual for the loader and manual for the backhoe ect,,it really gets expensive . so I usually do my research on the computer and dig to get my info ..sometimes here . so working on old tractors is not too hard but when you get into backhoes there is alot to know and sometimes I ask for help here rather than just go order 4 manuals for a project.
