Farmall axle bearing

I have a 560 that just started popping and cracking lightly in the left rear. It don't sound like it is coming from the hub, rim, or weights. I believe it to be the outer axle bearing. Haven't got a chance to look into it yet. Is it more common for the outer or inner bearing to go out? My guess was outer my brother guesses inner.

It is far easier to check the integrity of the wheel attachment to the rim, and the axle than the bearing. If you put fingernail polish on the bolts and clamps and axle to hub connection, and drive it a tiny amount, cracked polish will show movement. If it is not the rim/wheel, don't operate it with the bearing going out, or it will score the axle, or housing when the bearing locks up. Jim

The inner is more common to go. When this happens the bull gear rides on the bottom of diff housing and have even seen it wear through on some tractors. I have seen a few tractors with the housing brazed up there. And if it grabs a roller will split it

rustred: Thank you for answering my question. I hope to find out in this case this weekend if time permits.
