806 Leaky water pump question....

The water pump on my 806 leaks, but only at idle. Why is that? Is the pump not making enough pressure to expand the packing or is it a different
issue? Doesn't make a difference if it's hot or cold. I thought that was odd.

Thanks,
Mike

Why i am not sure, but i do know that about every 4-5,000 hours you got to replace it. I hope u got a chain hoist or something to lift that cast grill up and away a little.

Hmmmm.... the water pump don't clear the radiator or the casting? Can't look today as I'm up to my pits in lawn mowing duties & the darned mower just pooped out on me a minute ago. Hope it's just out of gas.... but it looks like there's still a touch in there.

Ya don't need no stinking chain hoist to putt the grill casting , To remove a water pump off and 806 diesel ya remove the bolts from the shroud and hang it off the fan drain your system and remove the hoses , then remove the four 1/4 inch bolts holding the rad to the side mounts and lift the rad up and out , pull the shroud out then the fan blades loosen the fan belt and remove , remove the pulley then the pump . If the rad sat just a 1/2 in more forward ya would not even have to do that . Done many in the field by myself in and out in under three hours on a tough one .
even done the rebuild on them . Just get the water pump bearing and have access to a press and a bearing splitter .And make sure you get the impeller set on correctly and the fan hub set so the belt runs true.

Sounds easy enough. I might just bang that job out in the next week or so then. Was just going to wait until I do a teardown this fall to replace the rear oil seal & hunt down that annoying knock around the bottom of cyl #2. Would be nice to have one less job to do when I get that far.

Thanks, TV!
