IH 574 Questions

So purchased an IH 574 a couple of years ago. Upon purchase the key switch was non functional, as well as all the lights, and gauges except tach. Makes sense, given it is mechanical drive. Previous owner had installed a push button start. u106k serial range.

Starts and runs well, but has basically been sitting while I did some routine maintenance and gotten around to fixing the wiring.

It has wiring for the 3 wire alternator, but only 1 wire is hooked up. Guessing previous owner installed a 1 wire alternator.

Got a key switch on the way to replace the current one, and I also noted back inside the instrument cluster area a broken junction block, so that will be replaced.

Question is, is it possible the 1 wire alternator, key switch being non op, and this junction block causing my issue? My thought from reading the wiring diagram, is that light and gauge power comes from the keyswitch, so if it is "off" as far as the tractor is concerned no power will flow.

Thanks,

Those junction blocks are junk on those. I rewired ours and bypassed those for the basic start, charge circuits and didn't bother with lights and all the nonsense stuff. The original wire on Ih tractors is basically pretty poor quality also. Always looked like steel wire with poor grade cloth like covering for the insulation. The 574 is really poor quality wire. I ran a wire from the key switch to the battery to get ignition juice than tied into the ether button for the solenoid trigger to start. That took the load off the key switch. Has worked goof ro several years now. Then wired the alternator from the bat terminal to amp gauge then to starter at battery connection. The one wire goes to the battery terminal on the alternator and the other went to the key switch if I remember correctly. This is on a diesel model. Charges and works fine. You could Wire a block in to run other things from. And switch them separately thus taking the load off the key switch.
