IH 424 fuel pump

Hi everyone, I ran my 1967 IH 424 out of gas. Not sure if that had anything to do with it, but after adding a few gallons it will not start.
I could tell something was wrong as soon as I turned on the ignition. Usually you hear the fuel pump working before I hit the starter. It didn't make a sound. It cranked fine, I checked what connections you can get to by hand.
Is there a way to service that fuel pump? I see that the bottom has a nut and twist off dogs.
This is the C-146 four cylinder gas engine.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Just a note, after letting it set for a couple hours I tried starting it again. No sound from the fuel pump again, but it did fire up only to run for about a minute. I'm thinking gravity filled the lines with fuel.

Trying to remember what I have done when I ran my 2424 out of fuel. Maybe tap lightly on the pump with a hammer - seriously, that is the first thing that came to mind. Not sure why. But I have had the tractor for 30 years+. Did you try taking the sediment bowl off and cleaning it out good?

You may have had crap at the bottom of the tank that plugged up the sediment bowl screen before it ran totally dry. Someone should pipe in soon with more technical wisdom than I can share.

It's an old style "Bendix" fuel pump, and it has failed.

You can replace it with a $$$ pump from the FIAT dealer that is a direct replacement or get a generic replacement for a LOT less $$$ from ebay or Amazon but likely you'll have to be creative to match the fittings up.

I wouldn't give that a second thought over big $$$ but for some a little creativity vs. lots of bucks doesn't happen.

If that is the tank I can see, in the left side of the picture above the hydraulic line behind the clutch. Then why do you need a fuel pump on a gas just let it flow and the needle valve shut it off in the carb.
