Which way does the thrust bearing go on the upper bolster pivot shaft, to mate with the housing, big end up, or small end up, the old one came out in pieces,, on a H Farmall ? icrs!!

I believe the smaller size goes down. This is to prevent dirt and water from getting into the open cover if it were big side down. Jim

Hard to see unless you look close. One side of the bearing race has a smaller ID than the other race. It goes down, and if I remember correct the inner lower edge of race has more of a rounded edge than the upper.

I am more embarrassed . My 424 started missing while I was brush hogging. It uses oil so I pulled plugs and they looked fouled. Replaced plugs and it ran some better but started missing badly again. Brush hogged couple more hours with it missing . Checked condenser points gap and found it to be almost zero. Engine had been running on ONE cylinder [ verified by pulling wires for spark check] Adjusted gap and she took off like a jet engine . I amaze myself at times .
