Question about stage 1 Super H

This is my first post on here. My father
and I collect and restore farmall tractors
as a hobby. We have had a stage 1 super H
for years. Its an early one. The early
stage 1 models had small standard H style
carbs ours in serial #8108. It came from
Indiana. We are in Va. An older friend that
worked at an IH dealership told us that
when they first came out the tractor had
the higher gearing and with the smaller
carb couldnt keep up, so they switched it
to a M style carb.a local guy called us the
other day to see if we were interested in
his old farmall. We ended up buying it. Its
a stage 1 super H with the larger carb. We
got it home and cleaned it up and to our
astonishment it serial# 8109. Its complete
random luck we ended up with 8108 and 8109
and the crazy part is they are the
transition from the early style small carb
to the later large carb. Does anyone have a
Super H around those serial numbers to help
confirm this? They both were in great shape
with low hours and have correct year
castings on the blocks so i highly doubt
the carbs were changed. Just trying to do
some extra research.

The carbs certainly could have been changed on either tractors knowing what farmers can do. However if they haven't been changed you certainly have a great find so I hope someone can help you verify what you have is correct. There is probably some change order somewhere in the archives stating when the change over occurred. I hope you really have what you think you have.

All SH came with the big type carburetor. Look and see if both have the exact pipe from air cleaner to carburetor. Little different one was used with a SH compared to a H. Also the throttle tube from carburetor to governor will have a different number on it than a H if you can find it on the tube. If it has a original SH manifold on it a H carburetor wouldn't fit. Though some can be found where they slotted the bolt hole in a H carburetor from outside of flange to holes and installed them. One fellow I knew who done it said it used less gas.

This is part of a IH advertisement for the new SH they where coming out with. May be hard to see but down in it they mention the carburetor change. Late H tractors had more transition feathers than a SH.

ALL of the parts catalogs I have ever looked through, both original and aftermarket, show nothing but the large carburetor for the Super H.

ih agreement with the other here. I have had low serial number SW4s under the 1000 serial range with all large carbs
does your tractor have the c164 in it? may have had an H engine swapped ate sometime

Mongro,
8108 and 8109 should have a C-164 motor block with a serial number of approximately 9439. There will be a spread of 1315 or more between the chassis and motor serial number if they still have the original block. The serial number will be stamped into the block below # 3 spark plug. Pretty sure if my math is correct the numbers will range between 9423 and 9442, crunched some figures and came up with 9438 and 9438 most likely. If you get a chance please check and let me know how close to correct I am.
thanks,

One thing about your comment, the casting on the block would have NOTHING to do with changing the carburetor. The carburetor is mounted to the intake manifold, which has almost certainly been changed in the 67 years since the tractor was built.

My dad has a Super H with a 3-digit serial number, and it has the larger M carburetor.

my brother had a Farmall H with a C169 in it with the original H manifold and carb a lot of crazy things get done on the farm in 60 or 70 years. Like I said may not even have original engine or may have needed a manifold and thats what was cheap
