Front wheel bearing

I have a 1953 Super H and the left front inside wheel bearing was making noise. I removed the wheel and it was dry with no grease.. Naturally the rollers all fell out. The manual said to leave the inside bearing in place, clean it and regrease. I’d really like to replace it but there looks to be a collar on the spindle that prevents me from removing it. Can I just file down the collar and replace the bearing?

Nope. It'll have to come off. It'll take a little work to get a pry bar behind it & you have to work it off evenly. (A BFH & a heavy duty punch are helpful. A wheel puller may be needed.) Get the numbers off of both the cup and cone. Save the dust cover if you can, they are usually hard to get. The bearing supplier can get (recommend) some wheel bearing grease for you. Check the other side when you are done with the one you currently have apart, it'll need new grease, at least. Go to a "you-tube" video to see how to properly pack the bearing.

A bearing splitter is a real device that uses a pair of heavy bolts to bring sharp edged parting wedges between the spindle and bearing race. The new bearing must use that ring, it is not sold with the new bearing. Jim
one like you need

If it has a collar someone added it. Since the bearing is being replaced split the inner race or heat it and pull off. Sometimes the spindles get worn and leave a ridge in front of the bearing. Dress down or get inner race off and dress down if needed. Had very few good bearing that wouldn't come off without a puller.
